- Fruit Fundraiser starts tomorrow! More info below and being sent home tomorrow with the students. Runs from tomorrow through Nov. 1st.
- All State Audition Times are posted (see post below, make sure you know your time---all Auditions are at AuGres Sims High School and the Parents/Students are responsible for rides to and from the school). Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to warm-up, that the appropriate scales are memorized, and that you are prepared (at least mentally) for sightreading.
- Please see the Calendar Tab to reserve a slot for All State rehearsal times with Mr. Akers. I forgot I have a meeting Tuesday after school so I do have to block that off now, too... :(
- I will be sending home High School Solo and Ensemble forms this week as well so look for those and then we can start picking out music. See the Calendar for when that event is.
- Congrats to our Clarinet Students who attended the Workshop this weekend at SVSU. I'll keep you guys posted on if they offer this type of thing for other instruments---it was very cool!
- Also, on the practice charts coming home this week look for a new section on the back where parents need to fill in when and where they have volunteered---we are updating and double checking our records, so if you've volunteered at band camp, concerts, football games, etc, do your best to write down approx when you volunteered so we can make sure your student's account earned credit for this :) And then when I get those next Friday I'll pass those onto June and she'll go to work on updating them. From then on, each week you can update that when your student turns those in just as when the students record Merit earning activities!
- Also, no High School sectionals this week as our focus is on 7th and 8th Grade Solo and Ensemble students and getting those All State Students ready for their audition this weekend.
- High school: Please bring warm-clothes for outdoor rehearsals. We have our last home game Friday and we were brainstorming on the way back from SVSU and your fearless Sophomore Drum Major brought up the fantastic idea of dressing up in Halloween costumes
A few things coming up this week:
When: Tomorrow through November 1st
What: Oranges and Grapefruit (box sizes/prices will be on the envelopes and the website).
How: Customers can order through students, writing their orders on the form, paying by cash or check (made out to Tawas Area Bands) or through the Banner on this webpage (along the side------>)
If they order through the website, there is an option to select which student should get the credit. I will be splitting the profit of the fruit sale between the student's points accounts (which are going to be updated very soon by our new points person June Westheim) and will be available to view on this site very soon so you can stay updated on what's going on their accounts. The money that goes into the student accounts can be used for Band Camps, reeds, uniforms, trips, etc.
Prizes: Top seller in each grade earns a $25 Gift Card to iTunes or Walmart and the top selling class earns a Pizza/Movie Party!

To reserve a rehearsal time with Mr. Akers, please fill out the sign-up sheet under the Calendar Tab. Once you open up the "S & E and All State Audition Calendar Sign-up Form", simply enter your name under the appropriate time slot and it will automatically update it for everyone to see. You can always close the window and go back and reopen it to make sure it saved.

Saturday is our big day at SVSU for the Clarinet Workshop and Masterclass. Here’s the schedule:

Music (if performing on a masterclass)

A small snack for between events
Please wear nice, casual clothes (jeans and a nice shirt are fine).
Schedule for Clarinet Day
9:30 am Arrive at the High School and load up the van for departure. Please bring something to eat for on the way! There isn’t a scheduled lunch once we get there but we will stop for dinner on the way home. Bring something to hold you over until after the performance and some snacks for during the workshop if they have breaks.
ALL EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE IN RHEA MILLER HALL
11:00-12:00 pm- Arrival and Registration.
12:00pm-Official welcome and group warm up (you will need your clarinets)
12:30pm-Opening recital featuring Professor Kip Franklin and Mina Son
1:15pm-Masterclass with Kip Franklin
2:30pm-Improving your practice session (you will need your clarinets)
3:00pm-Question and answer session with Kip Franklin
3:30pm-SVSU Clarinet Choir reading session (you will need your clarinets)
4:15pm-Group Photo and Farewell!
4:30 pm Leave SVSU, have dinner. I’m expecting to arrive back in Tawas around 6:30 or 7 pm. If students have cell phones they can call or text on their way back.

Dear 6th and 7th Grade Band Parents,
We are well underway with our MEAP Testing at the Middle School so I know that most of your students day is consumed with that important test, but I wanted to send home a reminder and few important announcements about our 6th and 7th Grade Concert next Thursday October 17th.
First of all, we will be moving the concert to the High School Gymnasium. The parking and space will be much easier to work with.
Call Time for the concert is 6:00 pm for the 7th Grade Band Members who need to report to the High School Band Room for warm-ups. 7th Grade Band students may set their instrument cases at the top of the risers in the band room. 6th Grade Band students may set their their cases in the far hallway (see map below). The 6th Grade Band needs to report to the High School Band Room at 6:30 pm to warm-up and line up for the concert. 7th Grade will go up to the top of the bleachers at 6:30 pm to wait quietly for the concert to begin. I will be in need of 3 7th Grade Band Parents to help supervise the students and keep them quiet at this time as I will be working with the 6th Graders. It’s very important that they remain quiet while up there and set a good example for the 6th Grade students.
If you can help me with this task please send me a text message at 517-250-1513 so I can put you on my chaperone list.
Also, our Band Boosters will be distributing the Quilt Raffle Tickets as well as have the annual Band Bazaar Quilt on display. As a Band parent, you are asked to sell the quilt raffle tickets and return the money and ticket stubs to Mr. Akers as soon as you have them sold. The Quilt Raffle is held on November 16th at the Band Bazaar, where the winning ticket will be drawn and the quilt on display will be raffled off.
Last but not least, I wanted to make this concert even more fun and since we are approaching Halloween I’m allowing the students to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume for the concert. Please use discretion as no blood, gore, weapons, or other inappropriate costumes will be allowed. This is to be a fun family event so use proper judgment when selecting your student’s costume.
Please see the paper I sent home today for a map of where to go for the concert (for those that are unfamiliar with the High School).

This week is a big week for us with the Alma College Marching Invitational coming up! Here's the schedule:
Students arrive at High School at 7:00 am to get in uniform and load up.
Leave Tawas: 7:45 am
Arrive: 10:15 am
Warm-ups: 10:45 am
Travel: 11:15 am
Peformance: 11:30 am
We will have lunch after our performance. Students need to bring $10 or so to buy lunch at the concessions stands (they usually have a pretty good selection) as well as some $$ to stop for dinner on the way home . Students can also bring a change of clothes for after the performance. Please keep your colors for after the performance Red and White as we are still representing our school in the stands (and Drum Majors will need to be in uniform for the Awards Ceremony).
Also, BE SURE TO HAVE A BLACK T-SHIRT for underneath your uniforms. No jewelry, no piercings, no crazy hair colors, please!
Awards are at 3:40 pm.
After the awards we will be leaving for Tawas (and also stopping for dinner on the way home).
My best guess for arrival back in Tawas is around 7-7:30 pm. If you are signed up for the HS Band Mailing list, I will send a message to your cell phone when we are approx. 30 min. from the High school so you know when to pick up your student if you can't make the drive to Alma.

Tuesday 3-4 pm Flutes and Clarinets
Wednesday: 5-6 pm Trumpets, 6-7 pm Drumline and Pit (changed due to Boosters Meeting)
Thursday: 7-8 pm Alto and Mellophone Sectional

****Booster's Meeting this Thursday 6-7 pm in the High School Library**** As a Band Parent you are a Band Booster and I'm needing some major help with a lot of upcoming projects---don't wait for me to ask you---come and find out what you can do to help out and get involved!
We need help with:
October 17th: 6th and 7th Grade Band Concert 7 pm at the Middle School
I'll need a few parents willing to help out with watching students in the warm-up rooms and supervising in the hallways. If you can help out with this, leave me a comment (and be sure to tell me what you want to help out with!)
October 19th: SVSU Clarinet Workshop
Departure time will be posted soon but I do probably one other parent with a large vehicle to help transport students (I'll have the school van). I'm guessing departure time will be around 9 am but more info to come later this week!
Oct. 25th: Last High School Marching Band Football Game
Oct. 26th and 27th: All State Auditions at AuGres High School for selected students (not for full band). Times to be posted soon! Students do need to provide their own transportation to this event.
And last but not least, we'll have our Annual Fruit Sale Kicking off October 18th and running through November 1st.... whew!
Put all of these on your calendar as they will be coming up fast!
